Scroll Saw Crafts - Finishing
After tried hand full of scroll saw crafts, I thought of try some professional finishing.
I decided to do the crafts on Teak wood. I checked in the saw mill near my house for 1/2 inch teak blank, they said generally they don't cut wood below 1 inch. Then they told there are some crap wood laying on the other side, go and check it. Interestingly I found a 1/2 inch blank, it is a outer wood with barks. Also got a 3/4 inch small blank. As usual I download patters from Steve Good website. Made some craft item on teak wood.
Initially I thought to give it to a carpenter for finishing. I checked with a carpenter in my street for finishing and he told a guy who does polishing job for him. I gave my items to him for polishing. After 2 days when I saw the final finish, I was totally disappointed. He just did two coating of Sheenlac wood finish, not even didn't done smooth sanding. Then I decided to buy a sander on my own, I order Black & Decker KA400 1/4 Sheet Sander in internet.
Then I started learning the various step in Finishing. It starts from Preparing the surface (Sanding & Filling), Staining (Colouring) and final top coat. There is another step will be done before top-coat is sealing. Generally oil based products are used for sealing. I smoothed the surface with my sander, starting with 100grit sandpaper and followed by 320grit sandpaper.
Carpenter has told me about a powder used for teak wood polish. I searched and found that, it is called RAW SIENNA. I also bought dark brown colour powder, I think that would be BURNT SIENNA. I have applied this powder mixing with water using cloth. It has stained the wood, as well as filled the grains also.
I got to know about 2 types of top coat polish - Polyurethane and Lacquer. But after detail analysis I decide to go for Polyurethane based polish. I bought Asian Paint Touch wood polish which is of Polyurethane based. Otherwise Sheenlac had a Lacquer based polish and also Lacquer is available on Spray Tin.
After mixing with thinner i have applied Touch wood polish using brush. Sanded with 320grit sheet between the coats. Also kept for a day to dry before next coating. It really came out very well. Even the Raw sienna colour also highlighted the wood grains.

Scroll Saw Crafts
As a next step, I need some different types of Scroll Saw blades. Same type of blades are used in Fretsaw, which is a hand tool. Please refer my previous blog A Start - Scroll Saw Crafts to know more about my setup.
I couldn't find any on-line portal in India selling scroll saw blades. I stepped out to SPJ road in Bangalore to search for Fretsaw blades. After searching lot of shops finally found it in a small shop. It was so cheap that a bundle of 10 dozen was Rs.60. I bought No. 5 (0.97mm x 0.40mm), No. 3 (0.82mm x 0.36mm) & No. 1 (0.67mm x 0.32mm) blades. Also bought a handle drill with drill bit set. With that now I am all set for intricate designs.

I have downloaded all patterns from Steve Good website. First I started with Rhythmic Gymnastics design. For this I took a little bigger plank as it is 8inch tall. After I pasted the pattern on the wood, I used 1.5mm drill bit on the hand drill to make start hole on the pattern. With the thin blade I am able to do cuttings below the leg of the right lady very well.
Actually the left lady was holding a ring on her hand in the original design, when I was polishing with the sand paper I broke that ring. Then I removed the ring complete to make the design look perfect. Also I made a base plate to fix the design as it is not so stable.
Next one, I decided to do a Bike rider and choose this pattern. After cutting the pattern, I felt there wasn't much details on the body expect few grooves. Then I cut the engine design to give some more bike feel on the design, which is not there in the original pattern. As a regular process I did 3 coating of varnish. These patterns were looked awesome on silhouette stills.
I wanted to do a pattern of nature scenic with little more details. I choose this Woodland scene pattern. I have used No. 3 blade for cutting the tree and deer legs, it came out very well. Actually all these patterns are of Desk Clocks, however I haven't cut the clock circle for bike and Woodland design. But the complete circle was well suited as Full Moon on Woodland Scene. Even it suited well in Gymnastics as a ring.

A Start - Scroll Saw Crafts
As I mention in my last blog, I am fascinated by making wood craft using Scroll Saw.
I started searching Scroll Saw machine in India. A company in Coimbatore selling PROXXON Scroll Saw and basic model starts from Rs.11000. However I have space constrain at my home, so I was looking for other options.
I found a product from Neutechnik Toolshop Germany, Jigsaw Table & Accessories. It was interesting and had many features including Scroll Saw option. After having several thoughts, finally I placed the order for super set, which contains all accessories. It took more than 3 weeks for delivery including customs. To my surprise DHL hasn't charged anything on duty when they deliver. I also got free Jigsaw and Scroll saw blades along with this.

Initially I tried with regular Jigsaw blade on the Jigsaw table and I am able to do precise cutting. I gone through several tutorial videos about scroll saw cutting before I try with it. Finally I setup the scroll saw adaptor on the Jigsaw table and fixed this setup on my wooden chair. I tried a simple design on 1/2 plywood and amazed with performance.
It took some time to understand how to fix and align the blade. It is little tricky job, however I am able to handle it. Most important is after setting the blade properly there wasn't any vibration and quite comfortable to do the cutting. Overall it met my expectation, it is very Compact & Portable and it can be fixed on any hard table. Only problem is fixing and removing the blade is tedious job.
As a default, I looked for interesting pattern in Steve Good's site. I choose a Dolphin pattern, as I have 3/4inch wood plank with me. It is a simple and single line pattern, it means there is no inside cut design. This time I used double side foam tape to fix the pattern on the wood. I used No.7 blade which I received along with Jigsaw table. I tried the cutting techniques which I learnt on the tutorial videos. However I broken 3 blades before I complete this. Design came out very well.
Next project I planned to do on a 1/2 inch plank and bought the same from used wood shop near my house. Started looking for a intricate design, however I am restricted to choose a pattern which doesn't have inside cut since I didn't have drill. Finally I choose the Racing Horse pattern. I fix the pattern on the wood using double side foam tape. As it was a single line cut from start to finish, I took less time to complete this. This time I broke one blade, however the pattern came out very well. Even the hair and tail came out beyond my hopes.
I smoothened the surface with 100 grit sandpiper initially and used 320 grit sandpaper subsequently. Then I applied 3 layer Varnish coating, every time I kept it for a day to dry and polish the surface with 320 grit sandpaper before apply the next coating.
You are welcome to contact me, If you want to have any of this design or any other design.
New Hobby - Wood Craft
I was having an interest on wood craft for a long time, recently I thought of pursue that.
To start with I thought to get some basic knowledge on this. In Facebook I found a free session on Wood work conducted by Mr.Hamsavardhan, Founder and Principal Designer at Esthete. This he conducts every last sunday of the month. It was 4hrs session and got to know about types of wood and tools. Then I decided to buy one power tool which will suit my needs, I narrow down to buy a Jigsaw. During the session he showed a Black & Decker Jigsaw which he was using for years, so I decided to buy the same.

I just checked the different models of Black & Decker Jigsaw and planned to buy Black & Decker KS700PE Jigsaws. I ordered it in Internet and arrived with in 2 days. Then I started thinking of a project to start with, as usual searched in Google and got some simple ideas which I can do just with Jigsaw.
My First project was a Display Stand. It is a 2 piece set, which can hold a Photo or any Display board of small size. Then I start looking for a wood for this and found a waste 1/2 inch plywood on my apartment. I did my own design with simple pattern. It was 10 inch height and 4 inch width. 1/2 inch of a groove for 5 inch in opposite direction on each piece. Just insert the pieces on the groove to make the stand and easily it can removed and stored.
My Second project was a Photo Frame. No Joint on the frame, using jigsaw I cut the center portion without cutting the frame. 2 small pieces will support the frame. This design I download it from Steve Good site, where I got more inputs on Scroll saw as well. As a finishing I applied varnish on it. My sister helped me in coloring the display stand with her fabric paint.
After having some hands-on with my jigsaw, I wanted to do some artistic work and choose a Deer set design from Steve Good's site. For this I planned to buy a special blade which has more TPI (Tooth per Inch). I ordered Bosch T119BO Jigsaw blade, which is small and has 12 TPI. This time I decided to buy some wood for this project and found a shop near my place who sells used wood. I bought a wood plank of 3/4 inch thickness.
Original design set has 3 Deers, however I made only 2 of it, mother and fawn. I printed the pattern on a paper and fixed on the wood using transparent tape. Initially I struggled with my jigsaw where the blades bent on the curves. After few tries I got some control on it and able to make perfect and sharp cutting. Using sand paper, I sharpened the edges & corners and smoothened the entire surface.
As I mentioned earlier, I am exploring wood craft using Scroll saw. In my next blog I will update my exploration and projects on Scroll saw.
